On Tuesday 1st April, our Climate Change – Cultural Burning Project (funded by the Queensland Department of Environment, Tourism, Science and Innovation) recommenced.

A powerful cultural burn took place at Minjehla Dhagun (Yugambeh Land Enterprises Limited) Mount Barney, led by Firesticks Alliance alongside the Mununjali and Julnair Cultural Fire teams. These teams have been recently recognised as Cultural Fire Practitioners through Firesticks Alliance Mentoring Program which has allowed the strengthening in reviving and sustaining Traditional Fire knowledge.

It was a perfect opportunity to see how the recent conditions could provide ideal conditions to manage what has become an invasive native in Blady Grass.

“The journey to heal and care for Country is shared through social interactions with Country, as it is our greatest teacher”.

This blady grass is burning perfectly in rain-soaked soil, clearing the way for healthier Country. Blady grass is a native grass but doesn’t belong in these paddocks. It offers little for grazing and when left unchecked, becomes a built up, hot burning fuel load that makes even the right fire harder to manage.
