Community Nest Project: Research and Trials

The BaDL Community Nest Project makes nests so local landholders and schools can help arboreal species survive loss of habitat.

The BaDL Community Nest Project makes nests so local landholders and schools can help arboreal species survive loss of habitat, particularly following the 2019-20 wildfires.

The aim is to build nests with optimal environmental outcomes. They should be highly durable, thermally resistant, water resistant and stable when installed. Other considerations include cost of materials, ease of manufacture and ease of installation.

The project team has researched the scientific and other literature on nests. Surveys reveal that nest boxes made of marine (structural) ply, even when treated with paint or decking oil, only have a lifespan of 5 to 10 years. Insulated tubing nests, in contrast, have a life of 50 plus years and are thermally effective.
